Our faculty
Our mission
The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering sees itself as a shaper and companion of industrial and societal change towards a sustainable and digitalized world and is committed to the targets of the “Sustainable Development Goals” of the United Nations.
In our research, we therefore focus on contributing to the development of a “zero-emission” society on the one hand and consistently exploiting the opportunities offered by the advancing digitalization of society on the other. The resulting production, energy and process engineering issues are accompanied by excellent basic research that leads to smart materials and products, innovative manufacturing technologies and sustainable processes.
Our apprenticeship
We are also committed to the same goals in our teaching. With our degree programs in Mechanical Engineering, Sales Engineering and Product Management, Environmental Engineering and Materials Science, we train future engineers who will drive industrial change in companies and research institutions. Our graduates have an excellent technical education, are socially competent personalities with an understanding of the market economy and will contribute to strengthening Germany’s leading position as an industrial location.
We offer high-quality education that leads to current engineering issues via a sound, theoretical basic education. Within the framework of obligatory internships, our students have the opportunity to apply their knowledge directly in practice. The number of staff and professors results in the favourable supervision ratio of one teacher for eight students. This enables the majority of the teaching programme to be carried out in small groups, which extends to individual supervision.
Modern research and laboratory facilities with experimental areas of approx. 12,000 square meters offer very good working opportunities. A constantly increasing inflow of third-party funds from public and industrial sponsorship contributes significantly to continuous renewal and maintenance.
Our network
Since our graduates are in demand worldwide, we consider an experience abroad to be indispensable and help our students to carry out part of their studies abroad.
As one of the most performing engineering faculties in North Rhine-Westphalia, we see ourselves as particularly committed to the regional environment. A balanced relationship between public and industrial funding is important to us and makes us a strong partner for local industry – the Ruhr region and the city of knowledge Bochum are particularly close to our hearts!
Our history
The Ruhr-Universität Bochum was the first new German university to be founded after the war in western Germany and was opened on 30 June 1965. At that time, a professor from the current Faculty of Mechanical Engineering had already been appointed for preparatory work. Official faculty work began on 21 April 1967 with the first meeting of the then still joint Department of Mechanical and Structural Engineering.
In the winter semester of 1968/69, the faculty began its teaching activities with the enrolment of the first students and can thus look back on a 50-year phase of expansion and development, during which it has acquired a respected position in the teaching and research of mechanical engineering far beyond the borders of the Federal Republic of Germany.
