To ensure that turbines in aircraft and gas-fired power plants have the longest possible life and operate efficiently, the team of the Collaborative Research Center 103 “From Atom to Turbine Blade – Scientific Foundations for a New Generation of Single-Crystalline Superalloys” is optimizing the microstructure of the turbine material.

CO2 emissions cannot always be avoided by replacing fossil fuels with hydrogen or electricity; in some processes, the generation of CO2 is unavoidable – for example in cement production. In these processes, the CO2 produced will have to be captured and recycled or stored in geological structures in the future. In the Collaborative Research Center Oxyflame, RUB scientists and colleagues from other universities are investigating a process that can be used to capture CO2 in a particularly elegant way.

As part of the collaborative research center BULK-REACTION, research teams from the universities of Bochum (RUB) and Magdeburg are developing computer simulation models for particle production processes that have been difficult to control but are very energy-intensive. The aim of the collaborative research center is to calculate more precisely the use of materials and energy, which has been virtually impossible to control up to now, by accurately predicting inaccessible production processes, for example in the manufacture of cement or ceramics in high-temperature ovens, and thus to significantly reduce both the consumption of fossil fuels and CO2 emissions.
